Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a hormone that is found in the adrenal glands, the gonads and the brain. It leads to the production of both male and female sex organs through androgens and estrogens. DHEA levels begin to decrease after 30, more quickly in women than men. These low levels can affect levels of other hormones, insulin and cholesterol.
Lower levels of DHEA are found in:
- People with hormonal disorders
- HIV/AIDS
- Alzheimer’s’ disease
- Heart attacks
- Depression
- Diabetes
- Inflammation
- Immune disorders
- Osteoporosis
- Corticosteroids
- Birth control by mouth
- Drugs that treat psychiatric disorders may reduce DHEA levels
Symptoms of high levels of DHEA:
- Oily skin
- Increased unnatural hair growth
- Deep voice
- Irregular periods
- Smaller breast, size
- Increased genital size
Men may experience:
- Breast tenderness
- Urinary urgency
- Aggression
- Reduced size of testes
Both sexes may experience:
- Acne
- Sleep problems
- Headache
- Nausea
- Skin itching
- Mood changes
There is some evidence that DHEA may treat depression, obesity and osteoporosis.
Studies are being done for DHEA treatment of HIV, schizophrenia, severe injury, hormonal disorders, sexual function and lupus.
