Migraines

Migraine headaches are a reoccurring throbbing headache that typically affects one side of the head and is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, disturbed vision and sensitivity to light, sound or smell.  They can have moderate to severe pain and last from 4 to 72 hours.

There are two types of a migraine, with aura and without (a common migraine).

A migraine with auras have the following symptoms: visual disturbances, including blind spots, flashing lights or zigzag patterns.  Confusion, depression, inability to concentrate, problems with articulation or co-ordination, pins and needles or numbness on the affected side, and lack of restful sleep.  About 10-15% of migraine sufferers experience these symptoms.

Common migraine symptoms are an intense throbbing headache, often only on one side, nausea and/or vomiting or diarrhea, increased sensitivity to light, sound or smells, stiffness of the neck and shoulders, tingling or stiffness in the limbs, inability to concentrate, difficulty in speaking and eye pain.

In some cases, there are symptoms which occur a day or so before the attack and can include: cravings for a certain food, excitability, hyperactivity, tiredness, yawning, or change of mood.  These symptoms are a precursor to the migraine itself.

What causes migraines?

There are “triggers” which vary from individual to individual.  For each person, there is a combination of factors which cause a migraine. But it is not always the same triggers and if all the triggers are not present or in lessening degrees then there may be no migraine.  The main causes of migraines are an inherited predisposition for developing migraines, stress, food triggers, environmental triggers, hormonal triggers or sleep disturbances, change in atmospheric conditions and smells. A good sauna detoxification program unloading your body of environmental toxins can be very beneficial followed by nutritional intravenous therapy as well as testing and handling of allergies and sensitivities to foods, trees, grasses molds etc. should be also part of the recovery program.
