Dental Materials Screening

A blood-based screening test evaluating a patient’s sensitivity to bio-medical composites, alloys and other materials used in dental restoratives, surgical implants and prosthetics.

In modern society, we come into contact with many substances every day in the environment – the food we eat, the products we use and the treatments we receive.

Because each of us possesses unique chemical sensitivities, these substances affect each of us differently and in varying degrees. For some, the effects of certain substances (and their corrosion byproducts) can be toxic and hazardous and may result in serious health problems. A substance which causes little or no reaction in one individual can prove harmful to another.

Since these effects may vary in each of us, it is vital that these material sensitivities be considered when choosing dental and other materials for use in the body, especially in patients with rare or unique health concerns.

Materials Reactivity Testing can be provided to a dentist or a physician so least offensive materials can be chosen and used in patients treatments.

WHY TEST

In modern healthcare, manufactured materials are commonly used to restore, repair or maintain structure or function in the body. These substances, known as bio-materials, are found in virtually every application ranging from dental restoratives to surgical implants and prosthetics.

Like fingerprints, biochemistries are individual and the effects of exposure to modern biomaterials (and their reactive byproducts) vary from person to person. An exposure that proves benign to one individual may prove to be extremely harmful or toxic to another. Negative effects have been known to range from mild irritation to extreme reactions such as long-term illness, dysfunction or damage.
As new and complex materials and alloys are continually developed, the impact that these materials present upon an individual’s body chemistry must be considered.

Being tested for materials reactivity prior to any procedure involving the use of bio-materials is also one-way patients can rest assured that the materials being used in their bodies are safe for them.

Knowing what’s right for you

Clifford Materials Reactivity Testing (CMRT) is a laboratory comprehensive blood test. This test used to help identify existing sensitivity problems to 94 chemical groups in an individual patient and measuring the reaction to each. These individual reactions are then cross-referenced against the largest professionally maintained database of trade name bio-medical composites, alloys and other materials of its kind in the world.

CMRT identifies the reactive chemical group or family and then correlates that finding with a database of biomaterials by trade-name. At the same time, it also indicates all products in the database by trade-name which have not shown any contraindicating components. The healthcare professional can easily check available biomaterials and identify those to avoid for the patient.

HOW TO GET THE TEST

This test requires a prescription. Patients seeking testing need to request the test of their local qualified healthcare professional such as a medical doctor, dentist or other health care provider licensed to order blood testing in your area. These trained healthcare professionals consider many factors that may be affecting your health in choosing a course of treatment.

The process begins with the lab testing which is not affected by diet or fasting.

A blood draw is required to prepare a sample for testing. The sample is then shipped overnight to Clifford Consulting & Research, Inc. The results are automatically provided to the ordering healthcare professional. Please speak with your doctor to obtain a copy.

The result is a multi-sectional report that designates the donor patient’s personal results of these potential positive or negative reactions to every material in the database alphabetically by trade name. This report is then expedited to the ordering doctor allowing them to choose materials that are clinically screened for greatest measure of safety for use in the patient’s body, even in time-sensitive situations.

With this information, health care providers can make informed decisions about the bio-material they choose to meet the need of each patient. This can be especially important in cases when a patient exhibits atypical health complications or sensitivities.

Despite the unprecedented depth of screening information that CMRT offers health care providers about their patient’s sensitivities, it is not a diagnosis or prognosis of any condition. Any interpretation or inference of the data CMRT provides remains strictly the doctor’s responsibility to determine.

Who Should Consider Being Tested

  • Patients with known materials-related problems
  • Immunocompromised and autoimmune-positive patients
  • Endocrine, hepatic and renal-compromised patients
  • Severe allergy patients
  • Universal reactor / environmentally ill patients
  • High cost, complex restoration projects
  • Galvanically active patients
  • Patients seeking peace of mind
